Your lower abs often sit out while the rest of your core does all the work. But pilates ab workouts use slow, controlled moves that leave them nowhere to hide.

And today’s pilates lower ab workout packs in 10 of those moves, from dead bugs to ab halos. Plus, there’s no reformer machine needed.

Sure, it might look like an easy ab workout. But roll out your mat, and those lower abs will say otherwise!

1

Dead Bug

Funny name aside, the dead bug is the perfect opener for this pilates lower ab workout.

That’s because it trains your core to stay steady, which you’ll need for every move ahead.

So go slow, and you’ll feel your lower abs doing the work.

How to perform:

  • Lie flat on your back on the mat.
  • Raise both arms straight up toward the ceiling.
  • Lift your legs into tabletop with knees bent at 90 degrees.
  • Keep your lower back pressed into the mat.
  • Reach one arm back overhead toward the floor.
  • At the same time, extend the opposite leg straight out low.
  • Bring the arm and leg back to the starting position.
  • Switch sides and repeat with the other arm and leg.
  • Keep alternating sides for the full interval.

2

Leg Compass

Remember the compass from math class? Your legs open and close the same way.

But your feet never touch the mat, which means your abs don’t get a break.

And if your lower back starts to arch, just hover your legs a bit higher.

How to perform:

  • Sit on the mat and lean back onto your forearms.
  • Extend both legs straight out in front of you.
  • Lift both feet off the floor to hover.
  • Raise one straight leg up high toward the ceiling.
  • Keep the other leg hovering low above the mat.
  • Lower the raised leg back to meet the other.
  • Switch legs and raise the other one up high.
  • Keep alternating legs for the full interval.
3

Straight Leg Crunch

This crunch works your abs from both ends, since your legs and chest come together.

The timing can feel clunky at first, though, so give yourself a few reps.

Once it clicks, think “closing a book” and let your abs pull everything in.

How to perform:

  • Sit on the mat and lean back slightly.
  • Place your hands on the floor behind your hips.
  • Extend both legs straight and lift them off the floor.
  • Keep your legs together and toes pointed.
  • Raise both straight legs up toward your chest.
  • Lift your chest forward to meet your legs.
  • Lower your legs back down to hover above the mat.
  • Lean back slightly as your legs lower.
  • Repeat for the full interval.
4

Bear Shoulder Taps

Picture a cup of tea on your lower back, and try not to spill it.

Easier said than done, since your core fights the wobble with every tap.

Oh, and doing this in a hot pilates workout? Wipe your palms first so they don’t slip.

How to perform:

  • Start on your hands and knees on the mat.
  • Place your hands under your shoulders.
  • Tuck your toes and lift your knees slightly off the floor.
  • Keep your back flat and hips steady.
  • Lift one hand and tap your opposite shoulder.
  • Place that hand back on the mat.
  • Switch hands and tap the other shoulder.
  • Keep alternating sides for the full interval.
5

Child Pose + Crunch

Not every move in pilates ab workouts has a built-in breather, but this one does.

First, the knee drives work your core, and then child’s pose lets you reset.

Just don’t get too comfy down there, since the plank is coming right back.

How to perform:

  • Start in a high plank with hands under your shoulders.
  • Drive one knee in toward your chest.
  • Return that foot back to the plank position.
  • Switch legs and drive the other knee in.
  • Return to the plank position.
  • Lower your knees to the mat.
  • Sit your hips back toward your heels.
  • Stretch your arms long in front of you in child’s pose.
  • Shift forward and press back up into a plank.
  • Repeat the sequence for the full interval.
6

Alt. Bent Leg Taps

On paper, these taps look like something out of an easy ab workout.

But that little crunch you hold the whole time changes things pretty fast.

So let your head rest in your hands, which takes the strain off your neck.

How to perform:

  • Lie on your back on the mat.
  • Place both hands behind your head.
  • Lift your head and shoulders off the floor.
  • Raise both legs into tabletop with knees bent.
  • Lower one foot down to tap the floor.
  • Keep that knee bent as you tap.
  • Bring the leg back up to tabletop.
  • Switch legs and tap the other foot down.
  • Keep alternating legs for the full interval.
7

Twisted Leg Raise

The twist happens at the top, but the real challenge is the way down.

That’s where your lower abs work hardest, since your legs will want to drop.

So try counting to three as you lower, which keeps you from rushing.

How to perform:

  • Lie flat on your back on the mat.
  • Rest your arms by your sides, palms down.
  • Raise both straight legs up toward the ceiling.
  • Cross your legs at the ankles at the top.
  • Lower both legs slowly toward the floor.
  • Stop just before your feet touch the mat.
  • Raise your legs back up to vertical.
  • Uncross your ankles at the top.
  • Cross them again with the other leg on top.
  • Repeat, switching the cross each rep, for the full interval.
8

Flutter Kicks

There’s a reason flutter kicks show up in some of the most effective ab workouts.

Those quick little kicks add up fast, so you’ll feel them low in your belly.

Once your legs start to feel heavy, just slow down instead of stopping.

How to perform:

  • Sit on the mat and lean back onto your forearms.
  • Extend both legs straight out in front of you.
  • Lift both feet off the floor to hover.
  • Kick one straight leg up while the other lowers.
  • Switch legs in a quick alternating motion.
  • Keep both legs straight and toes pointed.
  • Keep your upper body steady on your forearms.
  • Continue kicking for the full interval.
9

Over & Under

Only two moves left, so hang in there with me!

And since both legs move as one, your abs end up doing all the heavy lifting.

Your hands are just there for balance, though, so don’t let your arms take over.

How to perform:

  • Sit on the mat and lean back slightly.
  • Place your hands on the floor behind your hips.
  • Extend both legs straight and lift them off the floor.
  • Lower your legs to hover just above the mat.
  • Keep your legs together and toes pointed.
  • Lift both straight legs up high.
  • Lower them back down to hover above the mat.
  • Repeat for the full interval.
10

Ab Halo

Last one! This core pilates workout ends with a deep lower ab squeeze.

And while swinging your legs might feel easier, it takes the work away from your abs.

So stay in control, and keep the weight on your shoulders instead of your neck.

How to perform:

  • Lie flat on your back on the mat.
  • Rest your arms by your sides, palms down.
  • Raise both straight legs up toward the ceiling.
  • Press your palms into the floor.
  • Lift your hips off the mat.
  • Tilt your legs back over toward your head.
  • Lower your hips back down with control.
  • Return your legs to vertical.
  • Repeat for the full interval.
